They say being a teenager is the most difficult period in one’s life. There are so many changes in the body and hormones. As teenagers begin to assert their independence and find their own identity, many experience behavioural changes that can seem bizarre and unpredictable to parents. These, unfortunately, are the actions of a normal teenager. This is why it is difficult to find a teenager who has gone through the rebellious stages and difficulty in life, but still has his life together without any parents or guardians.
17 year old Martin Mutethia Kimani literally ‘dropped by’ the hospital gate and collapsed as the journey he had taken was too strenuous for a person in his condition. He had not eaten for days, had walked from Ngara to Muthaiga and had an infected wound from circumcision without proper treatment. Martin is an orphan who lost his parents in quick succession. His mother remarried after his father’s death and died in 2012. After her death, Martin’s step parents decided not to take him under their care because his mother had not parted ways in good terms with them. This proved to be a problem because his grandparents from his mother’s side were too old and could not take care of him.
